Bonehead Burger Company Opens First Brick-And-Mortar Restaurant In San Diego's South Bay

August 7, 2024

San Diego smash burger specialist Bonehead Burger Company has unveiled its first brick-and-mortar restaurant.

Founded in 2022 as a roving pop-up by brothers Kit Wingate and Blake Bone, Bonehead has garnered a loyal following for its mouthwatering smash burgers. Originally starting as a backyard grill at the VFW in Imperial Beach, Bonehead quickly gained popularity, leading to the launch of a food truck and successful pop-up events across the city, as well as a space within Barrio Food Hub in Barrio Logan.

Now, the brothers have opened their first brick-and-mortar eatery on Palm Avenue in Imperial Beach, in the space that last housed Seaside Candy & Ice Cream. The menu includes a variety of flat-top griddled smash burgers, like the signature Bonehead burger featuring their special sauce, cheddar cheese, crispy onion straws, maple bourbon bacon, and scallions, as well as a selection of smothered fries and tater tots. The Imperial Beach spot is currently open five days a week, but only on the patio while owners renovate the inside, hoping to be fully open in three months.
In addition to the IB outpost, Bonehead Burger Co. is set to open a larger location inside the Old Town Urban Market, occupying the space formerly held by Tuetano Taqueria (which is in the process of relocating to Chula Vista) and sister-concept Mar Rustico. This expanded venue will offer indoor seating, ample outdoor seating, and a selection of beer and wine to complement their menu, which includes not only burgers but also hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, and breakfast options. Looking ahead, Bonehead plans to introduce chef's table dinners with fine dining offerings.

Bonehead Burger Company now open Wednesday through Sunday from 5-9pm at 150 Palm Avenue in San Diego's South Bay city of Imperial beach. For more information, visit boneheadburgers.com.
