Salud Tacos Family Reviving In Original Tio Leo's Mexican Restaurant Space In San Diego's Mission Gorge

August 28, 2024

The family behind Salud Tacos, which closed its location in San Diego's Barrio Logan earlier this year, is opening a new concept in the original Tio Leo's Mexican restaurant space in Mission Gorge.

Earlier this summer, Salud Tacos surprised the community when it abruptly closed its doors in San Diego's Barrio Logan community after nearly a decade in business. Founded by Ernest Becerra's San Diego Taco Company, the brand started as a one-man catering cart before blossoming into the first brick-and-mortar location of Salud Tacos, which opened in the heart of the historic Barrio Logan neighborhood in 2015. Salud Tacos eventually opened branches in Las Vegas and National City, all which have since closed.

We've received word that the family behind Salud Tacos will be opening a new bar and restaurant in the 5,766 square-foot building that previously housed the flagship location of Tio Leo's Mexican restaurant, which closed late last year. Dubbed The Original La Familia Restaurant & Bar, the revived concept is expected to offer a menu of classic Mexican dishes, unique Salud-style tacos, Mexican street food, handcrafted drinks and local craft beers.
The former Salud Tacos space in Barrio Logan has been taken over by Todo Pa' La Cruda restaurant, which opened earlier this month. The new eatery offers an all-day menu featuring hearty dishes such as menudo, caldo de mariscos, and scratch-made pozole verde. The menu also includes pescado frito, chile relleno con queso, shrimp aguachile, mole chilaquiles, and birria, along with a variety of tacos and burritos.

The Original La Familia Restaurant & Bar will open at 6333 Mission Gorge Road in San Diego's Mission Gorge/Grantville area by this October. For more information, visit saludtacos.com.
