Amateur boxing will take over San Diego's Little Italy on Saturday, September 14, to raise money for homeless students.
San Diego’s Washington Elementary School in Little Italy will host the second annual "Punches in Little Italy" on Saturday, September 14, an amateur boxing event aimed at raising funds for the school’s homeless student population. Sanctioned by USA Boxing and presented by Filippi’s Pizza Grotto, Punches in Little Italy will consist of 10 three-round bouts featuring some of Southern California’s top amateur boxers. The outdoor event will turn Washington Elementary's schoolyard into a boxing ring for the evening.Punches in Little Italy will turn Washington Elementary's schoolyard into a boxing ring for the evening and feature multiple bars, food from area vendors, and a jumbo screen showing all the action. The event honors the late Bobby DePhilippis, a well-known Hall of Fame boxing promoter and founder of Filippi's Pizza Grotto, and will showcase young boxing talent from Southern California.
Tickets are available online starting at $50 for general admission, with select seating options at $75. VIP ringside seats are available for $375, and VIP tables for $3,000. VIP lounge seating is also available starting at $150. The event begins at 5:30pm, with the first fight at 6pm.
All proceeds will benefit Washington Elementary School, where more than 32% of students are experiencing homelessness. Attendees can also expect to support local organizations such as the Little Italy Association and Convivio, which preserves Italian heritage in the area. Last year’s inaugural event, dubbed Punches in the Piazza, as it was staged in the heart of Little Italy at the Piazza della Famiglia, raised $40,000 for Washington Elementary School, $3,000 for the Little Italy Association and an additional $3,000 for Convivio.
