The closure of the Claim Jumper restaurant location at 5500 Grossmont Center Drive in La Mesa marks the end of an era for the popular chain, which was known for its generous portions, rustic atmosphere, and family-friendly dining experience. The La Mesa location was one of the long-standing outposts of the chain, serving the East County community for decades. Known for its cozy log cabin decor and diverse menu, it was a go-to spot for celebrations, family dinners, and special occasions. The restaurant became a staple in Grossmont Center, with regulars enjoying its signature items, including steaks, burgers, and the popular salad bar.
Claim Jumper, a Southern California staple, was founded in 1977 by restaurateur Craig Nickoloff in Los Alamitos. The concept was inspired by the rugged charm of California’s Gold Rush, featuring a menu packed with comfort foods like pot roast, meatloaf, rotisserie chicken, and its signature six-layer Motherlode chocolate cake. Over the decades, Claim Jumper expanded across the western United States, becoming a beloved chain for families and groups seeking casual, hearty meals.
In 2010, Claim Jumper faced financial troubles and filed for bankruptcy, leading to its acquisition by Landry's Inc., a Houston-based restaurant conglomerate led by billionaire Tilman Fertitta. Under Landry's ownership, Claim Jumper continued to operate but saw several of its locations close in recent years as part of a strategic shift within the company.
No specific reasons were given for the La Mesa location's closure, but like many businesses, Claim Jumper has faced challenges during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, with changing dining trends and rising operational costs. The Grossmont Center site is now another vacant spot in the evolving retail landscape of La Mesa.
Fans of Claim Jumper will still be able to visit other nearby locations in Southern California, including a branch in downtown San Diego along the Embarcadero bay front. However, for many in La Mesa, the closure leaves behind memories of long dinners, family gatherings, and comfort food in a space that felt like a home away from home. As of now, there is no word on what will replace the Claim Jumper at Grossmont Center.
