Comedian Kevin Hart's Hart House Scraps San Diego Location Amid Broader Closures

September 14, 2024

Actor and comedian Kevin Hart’s vegan fast-food chain Hart House will no longer be opening a location in San Diego.

Hart House had previously announced plans to launch in Carlsbad's Bressi Ranch, taking over the space formerly occupied by Pure Burger. However, the closure of all Hart House locations on September 10, 2024, has led to the cancellation of this expansion.

Hart House was founded in 2022 with the goal of offering affordable, plant-based fast food. The menu featured vegan burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, nuggets, fries, tots, and oat-milkshakes, all free from artificial additives.

Co-founded by Kevin Hart, entrepreneur Andy Hooper, and chef Michael Salem, who previously worked on the Impossible Whopper launch at Burger King, Hart House sought to disrupt the fast-food industry by promoting a healthier, eco-friendly alternative. The chain emphasized sustainability with recyclable and compostable packaging.

Hart, who adopted a mostly plant-based diet in 2020, launched the brand following a life-changing accident that led him to prioritize his health. Despite initial success, the chain announced its closure after facing challenges related to rising operational costs and a tough economic climate in the restaurant industry.

The first Hart House location opened in Los Angeles in 2022, followed by additional locations in Monrovia, University Park, and Hollywood. Hart House's Hollywood flagship location, which featured a drive-thru, was considered a key part of the brand’s expansion plan. However, the overall economic environment, including pandemic-related effects and rising wages, posed significant obstacles to growth. The closure of Hart House follows other high-profile restaurant shutdowns in California, including several Shake Shack locations in the Los Angeles area.
