San Diego Natural History Museum Celebrates 150 Years With Big Birthday Bash

September 15, 2024

The San Diego Natural History Museum, fondly known as "The Nat," will mark its 150th anniversary with a Big Birthday Bash celebration on September 27 in Balboa Park.

San Diego Natural History Museum's Big Birthday Bash promises an unforgettable evening filled with delicious food, creative cocktails, live music, and opportunities to meet scientists and explore the museum's exhibits. The event will also feature a silent auction to support the museum’s mission of preserving nature for future generations.
Founded in 1874, The Nat has grown from a small scientific society to one of the most prominent institutions dedicated to natural history and conservation in Southern California. Originally located in downtown San Diego, the museum moved to Balboa Park in 1933, where it continues to serve as an educational and cultural hub for locals and tourists alike. Over the years, the museum has expanded its exhibits to showcase the rich biodiversity of the region, offering a wide range of programs focused on the natural world.
Guests attending the Big Birthday Bash will be treated to a curated menu crafted by some of San Diego’s most celebrated chefs, including Owen Beatty from Juniper & Ivy, Reyna Venegas from Rancho La Puerta, Brad Wise from TRUST Restaurant Group, and Michelin-starred chef Roberto Alcocer from Valle Restaurant. Sweet treats will be provided by Hatsuzakura, Sugar Kiln, Chef Lea Marie Dennis, Sweet Petite Confections, and chocolatier Michelle Lomelin, adding a delectable finish to the evening's offerings.
The event promises to be an immersive experience, with activities on every floor of the museum. Attendees can meet museum scientists, explore exhibits, and even get behind-the-scenes access. The silent auction, which begins at 7pm, will feature a variety of nature-themed items, including a trip to the Galápagos and a private wine tasting for 12. Proceeds from the auction will support the museum’s conservation efforts.
Tickets for the Big Birthday Bash are available online starting at $395, which includes unlimited food, drinks, entertainment, and general seating. For those looking for an elevated experience, the museum offers a Big Birthday Booster package, which includes reserved seating and additional perks.
The San Diego Natural History Museum Big Birthday Bash takes place on Friday, September 27, from 6-10pm, at 1788 El Prado within Balboa Park. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit sdnhm.org/join-and-give/the-big-birthday-bash
