Sun Diego Boardshops Opening Sprawling New Location In Former Rite Aid In San Diego's Pacific Beach

September 16, 2024

Sun Diego Boardshops is gearing up to open a sprawling new location in the space previously occupied by a Rite Aid Pharmacy in the shopping plaza that also houses Trader Joe's in San Diegos Pacific Beach.

Sun Diego Boardshops has taken over the 14,945 square-foot unit previously occupied by a Rite Aid Pharmacy within the popular retail hub at 1670 Garnet Avenue, also home to Trader Joe's, Staple's and Panda Express. The new store is slated to open its doors in early 2025, offering a larger footprint for the iconic San Diego surf and skate retailer.

Founded in 1981, Sun Diego Boardshops has been a staple in the Southern California surf and skate scene for over four decades. With roots in Encinitas, the company grew from a single surf shop into a regional brand, expanding its reach across San Diego County. The company has built its reputation by providing high-quality surfboards, skateboards, apparel, and accessories for outdoor enthusiasts and by supporting local surf and skate communities through sponsorships and events.
This upcoming Pacific Beach location represents a significant expansion for Sun Diego, especially since the company is taking over the large retail space formerly occupied by Rite Aid. The Philadelphia-based pharmacy giant shut down the location earlier this year amid a wave of closures nationwide, which many attribute to its October 2023 bankruptcy filing, as well as changing consumer habits and economic struggles facing traditional drugstores.

Sun Diego Boardshops will be scaling down their location within Belmont Park in Mission Beach with the upcoming opening of the new location not far away in Pacific Beach. The new outpost will continue to serve the beach-loving community with a wide selection of products geared toward outdoor activities. With Pacific Beach being one of the most popular surf destinations in San Diego, the expanded store is expected to attract locals and tourists alike.
