Torque Coffee Brings Award-Winning Coffee & Waffle Tacos To San Diego’s Historic El Cajon Boulevard

September 13, 2024

San Diego's coffee scene has just gained an exciting new addition with the opening of Torque Coffee, a vibrant coffee shop and roastery located in a historic building in City Heights.

Founded by coffee veterans Nanelle and Andy Newbom, Torque Coffee first launched in 2022 with a focus on ecommerce and wholesale. With over 20 years of industry experience, the Newboms have grown their brand into a top 5 roaster on the Spinn coffee marketplace and a top 10 roaster on Crema.co and Gocoffeego.com, even landing their products on Bloomingdale’s website. The opening of their new shop marks an exciting new chapter in their coffee journey.
Housed in San Diego's nearly century-old Rock Palace building, once filled with the sounds of 1970s vinyl and 1980s underground ska and punk shows, Torque Coffee has brought new life to the space. They join neighbors like Fringe Fabrics, Divine Theory Barbershop, and Elite Madness Fitness in this revitalized historic venue.

At Torque Coffee’s new shop, customers can expect a bright, welcoming space filled with natural light and plenty of seating. In addition to serving meticulously crafted espresso drinks, the shop offers a unique Cold Bar, featuring alcohol-free cocktails packed with functional ingredients for a flavorful and healthy boost. All coffee is roasted onsite, ensuring the freshest and highest quality drinks for their patrons. Patrons are also urged to order their drinks with Strauss Organic Barisita Milk or Planet Oat Barista Milk at no extra charge.
As far as food, Torque offers a progressive, plant forward, meat-free menu that includes house baked vegan and vegetarian pastries, muffins, quickbreads, cookies and more. They also offer a lineup of WACOs, unique breakfast and lunch waffle tacos made in house with vegan ingredients.

What truly sets Torque Coffee apart is its commitment to ethical sourcing. Through their Proportional Pricing program, Torque Coffee guarantees that 20% of the retail price of each bag of coffee is pre-paid directly to the farmers who grow it. This transparent and fair approach to pricing ensures that farmers are compensated more fairly for their labor, creating a more sustainable and equitable coffee supply chain.
As pioneers in the coffee industry, Nanelle and Andy have worn many hats over the years, from founding Barefoot Coffee Roasters to co-founding the Barista Guild of America. Their new venture continues to build on their mission to reshape the coffee supply chain for the better.

Torque Coffee is located at 3459 El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego's City Heights. For more information, visit torque.coffee.
