Originally opened in 2006 by East Coast transplant Jon Mangini, BASIC Bar/Pizza became a fixture of East Village nightlife. Modeled after BAR in New Haven, Connecticut, the New Haven-style pizzeria quickly gained popularity for its distinctive oblong, wood-fired pies. The pizzeria and bar, housed in a 1912-era warehouse, long served as a go-to pre- and post-game hangout for Petco Park events.
With BASIC's lease expiring this year, the landlord and his family decided to move in a new direction, replacing the pizzeria with Far Corner, a new bar and restaurant all their own. The upcoming concept, created by Maxwell Senescall, Karen Berry, and Phillip Senescall, will open at some point next year with a menu centered around pizza alongside a full bar offering cocktails, beer, wine, and spirits.
BASIC will remain open through October, with the possibility of extending through November, before relocating to a new base floor unit within the Park 12 mixed-use high-rise, adjacent to Petco Park. The new location is anticipated to open just in time for the Padres' 2025 season. Designed by Avent Design and built by CLTVT, the 5,000-square-foot space will feature the same signature New Haven-style pizzas, including the beloved mashed potato and bacon pie, along with a bar serving beer, wine, and cocktails.
