FIRST LOOK: AKA Asian Fusion Restaurant & Nightlife Destination Unveils In Former Lavo Italian/Searsucker Space In San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter

The team behind Gaslamp's popular Zama restaurant has introduced AKA, a new Asian fusion dining and nightlife venue sited in the former Lavo Italian/Searsucker space in the heart of Downtown San Diego.

AKA is the product of a collaborative partnership from founders Vincenzo Loverso, of San Diego Dining Group, and restaurateurs Alessandro Minutella and Giancarlo Guttilla, each bringing their own experience and vision to this ambitious concept in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. The trio first teamed up to open Zama Latin American & Japanese fusion restaurant at 467 Fifth Avenue, sited only a block from AKA
AKA, which translates to "red" in Japanese (pronounced "ah-kaw"), offers an upscale fusion menu developed by Chef Takuya Kudo, formerly of Nobu and Lumi, who brings his background in Japanese and Asian cuisine to this new venture. Kudo's menu blends flavors from Japan, China, and Thailand, featuring innovative and sharable plates, fresh sushi, and elegant entrees that showcase fresh ingredients and modern culinary techniques. The establishment also boasts an extensive cocktail program, led by mixologist Gerardo Bedolla, previously at Zama, who has designed a drinks menu that emphasizes bold, fresh flavors, aligning with the vibrant atmosphere of the venue.
The restaurant is designed by Cassandra Builer, known for her work at Huntress Steakhouse. The space has been transformed to create a modern yet sophisticated ambiance, with inspiration drawn from iconic New York City establishments like Buddakan and Tao. The venue combines chic Asian-style decor, bold lighting, and red accents that complement the "AKA" name, crafting a space that seamlessly transitions from fine dining to an energetic nightlife destination. Nightly DJ performances add to the allure, and weekends will feature an enhanced nightlife experience, complete with live entertainment and music.
Vincenzo Loverso, Minutella, and Guttilla are optimistic about AKA's potential impact on the Gaslamp dining scene, emphasizing their commitment to offering San Diego an experience that merges high-quality cuisine with dynamic nightlife. Currently open daily from 5pm to 2am, AKA is in its soft opening phase, with a grand opening celebration scheduled for November 7, inviting guests to explore a distinctive combination of Asian-inspired flavors, cocktails, and entertainment.
AKA is located at 611 Fifth Avenue in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter. For more information, visit akagaslamp.com.
