Way of the Warrior Kid, based on the children's novel by Jocko Willink, stars Chris Pratt and is directed by Joseph McGinty Nichol, professionally known as McG. The film follows the story of a retired Navy SEAL who has found success as a podcast host, bestselling author, and motivational speaker. While Matthew McConaughey was spotted on set, he is not part of the cast. McConaughey’s involvement was purely in a supportive "stage dad" role, as his son Levi has a supporting part in the movie. Other notable actors featured in the film include Linda Cardellini, Jude Hill, and Ava Torres.
The screenplay, written by Will Staples, tells the inspiring tale of a self-doubting young boy named Marc (Hill) who struggles with bullying and physical challenges, like not being able to complete a single pull-up. His life changes when his uncle Jake (Pratt), an elite Navy SEAL, moves in with his family to recover from an injury. Over the course of three summer months, Jake uses his SEAL Team training to mentor Marc, helping him grow academically, socially, and physically, guiding him to discover his inner warrior.
Pratt was also seen filming beach scenes and even jogging along Garnet Avenue before stopping by Pop Pie Co., as well as sited shooting inside Terminal 2 at the San Diego Airport. Locals reported that the actor was friendly and took time to pose for photos, adding to the excitement around the filming.
