San Diego's Pancho Villa Farmer's Market To Close, Leaving Dozens Unemployed

San Diego's Pancho Villa Farmers Market is set to close its doors later this year, leaving dozens of employees searching for new jobs after two decades in business.

Founded in 2004 by Stephen W. Boney, from the family behind the well-known Sprouts and Henry’s Market chains, Pancho Villa Market was Boney's venture into Hispanic groceries. After starting Boney’s Market Place, which focused on produce, vitamins, and health foods, Boney saw an opportunity to serve the growing demand for Latin ingredients, spices, and food products in San Diego.

Named after the iconic Mexican revolutionary leader, Pancho Villa Market quickly became a beloved fixture in the Normal Heights and North Park areas, known for its wide range of authentic Mexican ingredients and its freshly prepared foods. Its closure, set to occur on December 1, 2024, will leave a significant void in the community, as it has been the only Latino supermarket in the area for years.

At least 50 workers are expected to lose their jobs as a result of the closure, leaving many in a state of uncertainty. Attempts to reach the market’s owner for more information about the reasons for the closure have so far been unsuccessful. It is rumored that a Sprouts Farmers Market may take over the location following the closure, but no official announcement has been made.

Pancho Villa Market has not only been a grocery store but also a cultural and culinary hub for the neighborhood. Its unique offerings have drawn a diverse clientele, especially those seeking hard-to-find Latino products. While the closure will impact its workforce, the loss will also be felt by the community that has come to rely on it for their shopping needs. It is believed that the Pancho Villa Market location in San Ysidro, at 2004 Dairy Mart Road, will remain open.

Pancho Villa Farmers Market is located at 3245 El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego's Normal Heights/North Park area. For more information, visit panchovillafarmersmarket.com.
