Washington D.C.-Based Mediterranean Food Chain Cava Ready To Open In Downtown San Diego

Downtown San Diego is welcoming its first CAVA location, a popular Mediterranean fast-casual restaurant, on Friday, November 22.

Located at 1011 Union Street near the Santa Fe Depot, the new eatery promises to deliver fresh, customizable Mediterranean dishes to the heart of the city. To celebrate the opening, CAVA is launching several initiatives aimed at addressing hunger and supporting the local community.

On Thursday, November 21, CAVA will host a Community Day preview event, offering free meals to guests while raising funds for Feeding San Diego, the region's leading hunger-relief organization. For every monetary donation made during the event, CAVA will match contributions up to $1,000. Guests can register in advance to attend the event, which runs from 10:45am to 1:30pm and 5-7:30pm.

In addition to monetary donations, CAVA is also providing fresh meals to community members through the Crossroads Foundation during its pre-opening training week. These efforts align with the company’s broader commitment to fighting hunger and reducing food waste.

CAVA’s Community Day program, launched in 2019, has contributed over $500,000 to more than 60 non-profit organizations nationwide. The company recently implemented a national food donation program in 2023, ensuring that fresh, unused food from new restaurant training periods is shared with local community members.

"CAVA is committed to helping people live and eat well while supporting the communities we serve," said a company representative.

CAVA’s downtown location will offer its signature build-your-own meals, including grain bowls, salads, and pita wraps, featuring fresh Mediterranean ingredients like hummus, falafel, tzatziki, and more. Known for its health-conscious menu and bold flavors, CAVA aims to provide San Diegans with a convenient dining option that doesn’t compromise on taste or nutrition.

CAVA was founded in 2011 by childhood friends Ted Xenohristos, Ike Grigoropoulos, and Executive Chef Dimitri Moshovitis. The restaurant was created to bring Mediterranean food to a wider audience, using ingredients made from scratch in-house every day to prepare customizable dishes like salads, grain bowls, pita sandwiches and entree plates. The assembly line ordering system features over 50 offerings and 58 million possible combinations of ingredients and flavors. Cava is now a publicly-traded company more than 300 locations around the country, including San Diego branches in Encinitas, Del Mar, La Jolla, Carmel Ranch, Mission Valley, and San Marcos.

CAVA is located at 1011 Union Street, Suite 105, in Downtown San Diego, and will open to the public on November 22. For more information, visit cava.com.
