Brush Fire Erupts At San Diego's Marine Corps Air Station Miramar

A brush fire broke out at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar on Monday afternoon, sending smoke plumes visible from several areas across San Diego, including North Park and nearby freeways.

The Miramar fire was reported around 2:20pm on Monday, January 13, and quickly grew to cover 3 to 4 acres in light brush. According to incident command, the fire exhibited a moderate rate of spread. Helicopter 3 and 11 have been deployed to the scene, conducting water drops to contain the blaze. Firefighting efforts are supporting ground crews working to limit the spread and protect nearby structures. At approximately 3:30pm,  a report by incident command stated that forward progress had been stopped at 12 acres.

MCAS Miramar, a key installation for the United States Marine Corps, spans over 23,000 acres in northern San Diego and is home to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. While the base primarily supports aviation training and operations, its large expanse of open terrain makes it vulnerable to brush fires, particularly during dry and windy conditions.

As of the latest updates, no evacuations have been ordered, and there are no reports of injuries or structural damage. Drivers in the area are advised to stay alert for potential smoke-related visibility issues. Further updates on the fire's containment status will be provided as information becomes available.
