Comic-Con International, a cornerstone event in San Diego for over five decades, has confirmed it will continue to be hosted in the city through at least 2027, following an official announcement by Mayor Todd Gloria on Tuesday. The announcement quells previous uncertainties about the event's location due to concerns over affordability and hotel room availability.
Since its inception in 1970, Comic-Con has grown from a niche gathering to one of the most significant conventions in the entertainment industry, attracting over 135,000 attendees annually. The convention is a celebration of comics and popular arts, primarily held at the San Diego Convention Center, with additional programming at the San Diego Public Library and the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park.
The event's economic impact on San Diego is substantial. In 2024, Comic-Con contributed approximately $160 million to the local economy, with over $3 million coming from hotel and sales taxes alone. This influx supports critical city services, including public safety and infrastructure maintenance.
Mayor Gloria highlighted the significance of Comic-Con to San Diego's identity and economy, stating, "Comic-Con is not just a celebration of creativity and fandom — it's a major economic driver for our city, supporting local businesses and showcasing San Diego on a global stage."
Rip Rippetoe, President and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center, emphasized the collaborative effort behind the event's success, "We never take [Comic-Con] for granted. We appreciate the Comic-Con team and all our partners who contribute to a successful event year after year."
The extension of Comic-Con's stay in San Diego was made possible through cooperative efforts with the city, the San Diego Convention Center, the San Diego Tourism Authority, and the regional hospitality sector. David Glanzer, a spokesperson for Comic-Con, stressed the importance of affordable accommodations in securing this agreement, "Maintaining affordable hotel rates is crucial for the tens of thousands who visit San Diego each summer for Comic-Con."
This announcement not only secures Comic-Con's future in San Diego for the next three years but also reinforces the convention's role as a cultural and economic landmark. The next Comic-Con is scheduled to take place from July 24-27, 2025, preceded by a preview night on July 23.
