Eggholic Indian Street Food Restaurant Chain To Open First San Diego Location

A fast-casual Indian restaurant chain with nearly 30 locations around the U.S. and Canada, Eggholic is opening its first San Diego location.

San Diego's culinary landscape is about to get a unique addition with the arrival of Eggholic, an Indian restaurant chain specializing in egg-centric dishes from the state of Gujarat. Set to open in the space currently occupied by Dancing Yak By Taste Of The Himalayas within Little India shopping center on the border of Miramar, Mira Mesa and Scripps Ranch, this new venture is operated by franchisee Chintu Patel and will feature a beer and wine liquor license.

Founded by cousins Bhagyesh and Lay Patel in 2019, Eggholic began in a suburb of Chicago, hoping to cater to the South Asian diaspora longing for the flavors of their homeland. Their approach was to stay true to traditional Gujarati recipes rather than adapting them for a broader American palate, a strategy that has evidently paid off. The chain has grown to 28 locations across the U.S. and Canada, with plans for further expansion.
Despite the name, Eggholic is not a breakfast spot - it actually does not serve breakfast at all. Instead, it offers a menu dedicated to the art of Gujarati egg cuisine, diverging from Western expectations of egg dishes. Here, you won't find the usual suspects like omelets or deviled eggs. Instead, Eggholic introduces dishes like egg bhurji - a scramble infused with spices and vegetables, and lachko, where soft-cooked eggs meet a vibrant green chili gravy. The menu also includes specialties like cheese katori, where hard-boiled eggs are filled with spices and cheese, and surti gotalo, featuring both shredded and sunny side up eggs in a spicy gravy.

At Eggholic, indulge in an array of inventive egg dishes like the "Green Boiled Fry," where hard-boiled eggs are bisected and bathed in a vibrant, garlicky green chili sauce. Savor the "floating" omelette, caramelized to perfection and filled with sharp white cheddar, then drenched in a spiced tomato purée. The Masala Half Fry offers eggs with a runny yolk under a rich, spiced tomato and onion hash. Even if eggs aren't your thing, there are chicken and paneer options, but one thing is clear: at Eggholic, every day is a good day for egg dishes.

Eggholic's model embraces a "for us, by us" ethos, focusing on serving the South Asian community where they are concentrated, much like successful precedents in other cultural enclaves across the U.S. This approach not only preserves the authenticity of the cuisine but also builds a strong community following. While the restaurant does offer some familiar dishes like butter chicken to cater to varied tastes, its heart lies in the niche, egg-based offerings from Gujarat.

Eggholic aims to open at some point in 2025 at 9474 Black Mountain Road, Suites G-H, in San Diego's Miramar/Scripps Ranch area. For more information, visit eggholic.com.
