Originally founded in La Jolla in 2015, La Clochette was the storefront cafe concept eventually backed by since-shuttered Hommage Bakehouse bakery. La Clochette eventually closed their outpost at 6830 La Jolla Boulevard and relocated to Cass Street in San Diego's Pacific Beach in late 2019, where the eatery was known for its French-inspired menu.
In a heartfelt email to customers, the owners explained that the decision to close the Pacific Beach location was driven by economic challenges. They expressed gratitude for the community's loyalty, describing the cafe as a place where friendships were formed and memorable moments were shared.
"Over the years, La Clochette has faced many challenges and celebrated countless rewards," read the email announcing the impending closure. "Our Pacific Beach location became more than just a cafe - it became a place where we formed lasting connections, shared fun conversations, and welcomed you into a space to relax and enjoy good coffee and good food. We are deeply grateful for the support, loyalty, and love you’ve shown us. It has been an honor to serve this incredible community and be part of so many of your daily routines and special moments."
In late 2023, New York City-based business financing firm, Capitalize Group LLC, filed a lawsuit in Brooklyn, NY, against Hommage Bakehouse and La Clochette Du Coin. Hommage Bakehouse founder Justin Gaspar, as well as La Clochette owners Willy Wu Jye Hwa and Karine Beers, were also named as defendants in the lawsuit.
Despite the bittersweet closure, the owners hinted at plans for future growth, including a rebranding effort and the launch of a new concept called CTZN, a full-service restaurant and bar in Solana Beach set to feature Basque-California fusion cuisine.
La Clochette Pacific Beach's final weekend provides customers an opportunity to say goodbye and enjoy one last coffee or meal at the beloved neighborhood spot. For those eager to continue their support, La Clochette Mission Valley remains open at 7995 Civita Boulevard.
La Clochette will close its location at 4680 Cass Street in San Diego's Pacific Beach on Sunday, January 12. For more information, visit laclochettesd.com.
The lawsuit claimed Hommage Bakehouse and La Clochette Du Coin breached their contract with Plaintiff by failing to make required payment. Capital Group LLC ultimately received a default judgment for approximately $20,000 against the two bakeries and its owners. Hommage Bakehouse LLC is also being sued in San Diego County Superior Court by Alliance Funding Group for breach of contract. The case was filed February 13, 2024.
Hommage Bakehouse previously received $171,600 of crowd-sourced investment through Mainvest. It is being alleged the company folded soon after receiving the funds and looks to have either revived as Lucky Bolt Bakery or transferred its social media and Sorrento Valley bakery space to the company.
The impending closure of La Clochette in Pacific Beach comes as the owners claim they will turn their focus on expanding their Mission Valley location, which opened in late 2024 within the Civita community. The Mission Valley branch continues to offer La Clochette's French-inspired breakfast and lunch items, now serving as the business's primary location.
