Originally closed after a routine inspection on December 30, 2024, revealed multiple health code breaches, including a reportedly "major" vermin issue, Las Cuatro Milpas had hoped to resume service after addressing the problems. However, the latest in a series of inspections confirmed the persistence of the vermin problem.
The historic restaurant failed its first reinspection on January 10, 2025, where inspectors noted a major health violation for vermin and being non-compliant for plumbing, vermin-proofing, as well as maintenance for walls, floors and ceiling. Las Cuatro Milpas has another reinspection on January 16, 2025, where inspectors found the vermin issue was not yet remedied.
Health records indicate that the restaurant was mandated to close for two days in January 2022 due to similar infractions. Subsequent inspections showed minor violations, but the establishment managed to pass with flying colors in October 2022, December 2023, and August 2023, with only one instance where its grade fell below an A.
Since its inception in 1933 by founders Petra and Natividad Estudillo, Las Cuatro Milpas has been a staple in San Diego's food scene, known for its authentic Mexican cuisine, including homemade tortillas and traditional dishes. Its closure has not only affected its loyal clientele but also raised concerns about the future of this historic eatery, which has already navigated through financial difficulties including tax liens earlier in 2024, threatening a property auction if not resolved.
Despite these challenges, there has been no new public statement from Las Cuatro Milpas following this most recent inspection. Previously, after the initial closure announcement in early January, the restaurant expressed a commitment to undertake a thorough cleaning and pest control treatment, denying rumors of a permanent closure. The community continues to support and eagerly await updates on when this beloved institution might overcome these obstacles to serve the San Diego area once more.
