The Hillcrest Farmers Market opened on April 13, 1997 with only 27 vendors and has continued to grow over the years, most recently offering more than 175 vendors with more than 10,000 people per week visiting. The farmers market has been a Sunday tradition since its inception, offering fresh produce, artisan goods, food vendors, and a bustling atmosphere.
Operated by the Hillcrest Business Association, the market is considered San Diego's oldest and largest farmers market. Its original location at the DMV on Normal Street has been a hub for local vendors and a meeting place for neighbors for three decades. Later this month, the market will relocate to University Avenue, between Herbert Street and Park Boulevard, to accommodate the construction of the Normal Street Promenade - a permanent, purpose-built home for the beloved event.
The temporary move ensures that the market will continue uninterrupted during construction of the promenade. The new location on University Avenue will feature the same mix of vendors and products, operating rain or shine every Sunday from 9am to 2pm. Parking will remain open at the DMV.
The Normal Street Promenade project represents a transformative moment for the market. Once completed, this dedicated community space will provide a vibrant, accessible environment designed to enhance the experience for vendors and visitors alike. It will eliminate the need for street closures while increasing visibility and creating a true community hub.
"Hillcrest Farmers Market has always been more than just a market - it’s a community hub where neighbors connect and local businesses thrive," said Mark Larson, Hillcrest Farmers Market Manager. "This move to a temporary location is an important step toward an incredible future."
