San Diego's Famed Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop Closes North Park Location After Decade In Business

San Diego’s wrestling-themed Lucha Libre Taco Shop has officially closed its North Park location after serving the community for nearly 10 years.

Founded by brothers Jose Luis, Maurilio, and Diego Rojano-Garcia, Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop first opened in 2008 in Mission Hills. Inspired by their upbringing in Mexico and their admiration for luchador wrestling stars, the restaurant quickly gained a cult following. With its quirky decor and standout Mexican dishes, Lucha Libre earned a spot on the national stage after being featured on Travel Channel's Man vs. Food in 2010.

The restaurant’s success led to expansions, including a North Park branch in 2015, a spot inside Petco Park in 2014, and a short-lived location at The Shoppes at Carlsbad in early 2020. Most recently, a compact outpost opened on Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach in 2023.

In a heartfelt social media post, the Lucha Libre team shared the news of the closure:

"After 10 unforgettable years in North Park, we're closing this chapter - but the journey continues in Mission Hills! Thank you for being part of our story. From epic tacos and delicious burritos to countless memories shared in our ring, you’ve been an incredible part of this journey. Today, we say goodbye and adiós as we work on something new, fresh, and exciting."

While the North Park location has closed its doors at 3016 University Avenue, fans can still enjoy their favorite tacos and burritos at the original Mission Hills location or visit the Pacific Beach outpost. The recent closure hints at a new chapter for the Rojano-Garcia family and their culinary empire, with the promise of "something fresh and exciting" on the horizon. As the team refocuses on their flagship Mission Hills location, loyal fans are encouraged to stay tuned for updates.
