San Diego's First Cannabis Consumption Lounge & Restaurant Sets February Opening Date

San Diego is set to open the county's first cannabis consumption lounge this February. Sessions by the Bay is a 16,000-square-foot, multi-level facility offering a dispensary, a second-floor lounge & restaurant for cannabis use, and plans for a rooftop bar with bay views.

Sessions by the Bay is the culmination of nearly four years of planning by San Diego natives Alex and Pearl Ayon, with co-ownership by the Sycuan Tribe. The ground floor will serve as a sleek dispensary, while the second floor provides a luxurious consumption space complete with modern smoking devices like gravity bongs and vaporizers. Highly trained staff will assist guests, whether they are first-time users or seasoned consumers.

The 5,000 square-foot onsite lounge lounge reflects a shift in California's cannabis landscape, supported by recent legislation such as AB 1775, which allows cannabis lounges to serve freshly prepared food and beverages. To comply with strict requirements, Sessions features advanced air filtration systems that maintain a fresh and odor-free environment. The lounge will also be entirely alcohol free.
Partnering with the neighboring Kimball Coastal Eatery, Sessions will offer a curated, all-daymenu designed to complement the cannabis experience. Executive Chef Jorge Bendesky has created dishes like ahi tuna crudo on crispy rice waffles and brioche French toast stuffed with peanut butter and jelly. The menu is accompanied by mocktails and optional THC-infused drink additives, prepared in an efficient dumbwaiter system that shuttles meals directly from Kimball's second kitchen to the lounge.

The space also features immersive art installations, including a 12-room exhibit chronicling the history of cannabis. Guests will encounter thought-provoking displays on topics ranging from ancient medicinal uses to the War on Drugs and modern-day legalization.
Although cannabis has been legal in California since 2016, public consumption is largely prohibited outside private residences, creating challenges for renters and those unable to smoke at home. Sessions addresses this gap by offering a legal, stigma-free venue for cannabis use while also normalizing the plant's integration into mainstream culture.

Sessions by the Bay marks a turning point in San Diego’s cannabis scene, blending high-quality products, gourmet cuisine, and educational experiences under one roof. With plans to eventually expand to the full-service rooftop bar, the venue aspires to become a hub for both locals and tourists. By setting new standards for cannabis hospitality, Sessions aims to redefine the industry in San Diego and beyond.
Sessions by the Bay is anticipated to open on February 28 at 700 Bay Marina Drive in San Diego's South County city of National City. For more information, visit sessionsbythebay.com.
