Located just six blocks away, North Park Produce has acquired Pancho Villa’s tortilla-making machine and is already churning out fresh, hand-pressed tortillas. Additionally, the market has hired several Pancho Villa employees to maintain the expertise and quality that loyal patrons have cherished.
Pancho Villa Farmers Market, a mainstay in the Normal Heights and North Park area since 2004, was initially set to close its doors in December 2024 but extended operations at least through January. The impending closure marks the end of an era, with around 50 employees facing job losses and the community losing its only dedicated Latino supermarket. The market’s closure stems from economic pressures and changes in the local retail landscape, with rumors of a Sprouts Farmers Market potentially taking over the space.
North Park Produce, a trusted local grocer known for its diverse selection of Middle Eastern and Central European products, is expanding its El Cajon Boulevard location to include a robust Hispanic grocery section called "Super Mercado." This expansion is designed to fill the void left by Pancho Villa’s closure, offering a tortilleria, agua fresca bar, prepared foods, and a carneceria. The addition reflects the market’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its multicultural customer base while preserving access to the cultural staples Pancho Villa patrons relied on.
By integrating Pancho Villa’s tortilla machine and experienced staff, North Park Produce aims to ensure the continuity of quality and authenticity. The tortilla-making expertise, combined with the market's existing reputation for fresh produce and specialty imports, reinforces its role as a vital resource for San Diego’s diverse culinary communities.
North Park Produce has been serving San Diego since 1980, evolving alongside the city's growing and diverse population. With locations in North Park and El Cajon, the grocer continues to adapt its offerings to reflect community needs, solidifying its position as a beloved local institution.
North Park Produce is located at 3551 El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego's North Park. For more information, visit northparkproduce.com.
