Actress Issa Rae Joins San Diego Football Club As Part Owner

San Diego Football Club (SDFC) has added another high-profile name to its ownership group, with actress, producer, and entrepreneur Issa Rae joining as a club partner. The announcement comes as the Major League Soccer expansion team prepares for its inaugural season in 2025.

Rae, best known for her groundbreaking HBO series Insecure, has expanded her influence beyond entertainment into industries such as hospitality, spirits, and hair care. Now, she is making her mark in professional sports, aligning with SDFC’s mission of fostering community engagement and youth development.

"Joining San Diego FC’s ownership group is an incredible honor, and I am thrilled to be part of building something that represents and uplifts this vibrant community," Rae said in a press release. "Soccer is a universal language that has the power to bring people together, and I look forward to contributing to San Diego FC’s journey as we make history in MLS."

SDFC’s ownership group includes a diverse mix of investors, including World Cup champion Juan Mata, retired U.S. Navy SEAL Jocko Willink, and San Diego Padres star Manny Machado. Rae joins the team in partnership with Pave Investments, an African investment firm that previously played a key role in financing NBA Africa.

SDFC CEO Tom Penn praised Rae’s addition to the ownership group, emphasizing how her values align with the club’s vision. "Issa’s passionate connection to the Right to Dream mission aligns perfectly with our vision," Penn stated. "Her influence and perspective will be invaluable as we continue building a world-class football club that reflects the diversity and energy of San Diego."

San Diego FC will make its MLS debut on February 23, 2025, against the LA Galaxy, with its first home match at Snapdragon Stadium set for March 1 against St. Louis CITY SC.
