This transformation is not just a change of name but a melding of two local establishments under the stewardship of seasoned husband-and-wife restaurateurs Lee Scrivner and Melissa Upshaw, alongside their partner who owns both the building and Harbor Breakfast. For 14 years, Lee and Melissa have been part of San Diego's vibrant food scene, starting with their Gooseberries Kafe in Hillcrest, which opened in 2022.
Gooseberries Kafe is an all-day eatery inspired by the unique architecture of the Abpópa boutique micro-loft building it occupies, reminiscent of the Russian Aurora Cruiser. The eatery offers a casual yet sophisticated dining experience with an emphasis on scratch-made American cuisine available for breakfast and lunch.
With no reliance on influencers or paid advertisements, the couple has grown their business through culinary passion and community support. Their menu highlights include homemade bread, biscuits, vegan soups, and an array of pastries, all prepared fresh daily. Meats are roasted and ground in-house, showcasing items like turkey, roast beef, pork, and chicken apple sausage, with their corned beef brisket being a highlight for their signature corned beef hash.
Now, Gooseberries at the Harbor promises to bring this same dedication to Little Italy. The new location will continue the tradition of Harbor Breakfast classics while introducing Gooseberries' unique offerings. Signature items such as Gooseberry jam, an Egg-n-biscuit with crispy prosciutto, their special nut butter, and the beloved blueberry gooseberry muffin will be joined by daily soup specials and more.
Gooseberries at the Harbor will open this March at 1502 India Street in San Diego's Little Italy. For more information, visit gooseberrieskafe.com.
