Joann Fabrics & Crafts Now Closing All San Diego Stores As Company Shuts Down Nationwide

Just weeks after announcing plans to close most of its national store, including four San Diego locations, Joann Fabrics & Crafts has confirmed that all stores, including the last remaining ones in El Cajon and National City, will shut down as part of a full liquidation of the company.

The decision to close all branches follows a weekend auction in which GA Joann Retail Partnership acquired Joann's assets, signaling the end of the national fabric and crafts retailer. Pending final court approval, Joann will begin going-out-of-business sales immediately at all locations. This includes the remaining San Diego-area stores, which had initially been expected to survive the first wave of closures. Joann, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, had previously stated that it would close 500 of its 800 stores nationwide. Now, every location is set to shut its doors permanently.

Joann's exit from San Diego marks the end of an era for the region’s crafting community. For decades, the retailer has been a go-to destination for fabric, sewing materials, and other DIY supplies. San Diego customers will now need to seek alternatives like Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or online retailers to fulfill their crafting needs.

The liquidation process is expected to take several weeks, with discounts available in-store, online, and via Joann’s mobile app. However, gift cards will only be accepted through the end of February, and all returns and special discounts, including those for teachers and Girl Scouts, have been suspended.

Joann, founded in 1943, has faced financial struggles in recent years, with declining consumer demand post-pandemic and competition from big-box retailers. The company had previously emerged from bankruptcy in March 2024, only to file again less than a year later.

While Joann has yet to release an exact timeline for individual store closures, it is clear that San Diego’s remaining locations will soon be gone for good.
