Popular Surf Brands Billabong, Quiksilver, And Volcom File for Bankruptcy, Closing All Stores In San Diego & Beyond

In a move that shakes the surf and skatewear community, Liberated Brands, the parent company of iconic brands Billabong, Quiksilver, and Volcom, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, leading to the closure of all their retail stores nationwide, including several in San Diego.

Liberated Brands bankruptcy filing occurred on Sunday, February 2, following a year of financial struggles influenced by economic challenges, changes in consumer behavior, and inflation. This decision is part of a larger trend where brick-and-mortar stores have faced difficulties since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, with an increasing preference for online shopping among consumers. According to Green Street Advisors, nearly 25% of America's largest shopping malls are projected to close by 2027.

In San Diego, the closures will affect stores located in Carlsbad, San Ysidro, and San Diego, as well as other California locations like Camarillo, Irvine, and Santa Barbara. Notably, all three brands have outlets within Las Americas Premium Outlets in San Isidro. Additionally, Volcom operates a store in The Flower Fields mall in Carlsbad, while Quiksilver has locations on Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter and on Prospect Street in La Jolla Village.

The absence of these brand-specific stores might not significantly impact local surf and skate enthusiasts, who have traditionally supported local surf shops. Local businesses like South Coast Surf Shop and Sun Diego, which have multiple locations throughout the region, continue to carry Billabong, Quiksilver, and Volcom clothing, providing an alternative for consumers. The closure of these stores could benefit local retailers by reducing competition. Liberated Brands has offered significant discounts on their spring orders, which could help local shops improve their profit margins.

The brands are transitioning to new operators to ensure their continuity and growth, despite the store closures. This shift aims to maintain the presence of Billabong, Quiksilver, and Volcom in the market, though without their physical retail outlets in San Diego.
