Corner Bakery Cafe inside Westfield Mission Valley mall, which opened on October 1, 2007, at 1025 Camino de la Reina, Suite 3, recently shut down as part of a broader brand revitalization effort led by SSCP, the Dallas-based company that acquired the chain out of bankruptcy in June 2023. Despite this closure, other San Diego branches, including those in Carlsbad, UTC Mall, and First & Broadway in Downtown San Diego, continue to serve customers, maintaining the brand’s presence in the region.
The Mission Valley closure comes amid a strategic overhaul announced in a February 2024 press release, where SSCP aimed to stabilize and grow the 100+ unit chain following a challenging period. The revitalization includes reintroducing the original logo, enhancing employee retention with new training and incentives, and leveraging partnerships with companies like Qualtrics and Champion to boost guest experience and brand awareness.
Corner Bakery Cafe traces its origins to 1991, when it began as a small neighborhood bakery in downtown Chicago, founded on a passion for fresh, artisan breads and baked goods inspired by the city’s culinary heritage. Started by a group of entrepreneurs seeking to create a warm, community-focused dining space, the brand quickly grew from its initial location into a fast-casual restaurant chain, expanding its menu to include kitchen-crafted breakfast, lunch, and dinner options like the Anaheim Scrambler, Chicken Pomodori Panini, and Cinnamon Creme Cake. Over the decades, it expanded to over 100 locations across 18 states and Washington, D.C.
