Nick the Greek restaurant, known for its gyros, bowls, and souvlaki, will take over the space previously occupied by WaBa Grill in the Plaza Sorrento shopping center in Mira Mesa. This marks the second Nick the Greek location in San Diego, following the opening of its first outpost downtown near Petco Park in East Village in 2020.
Founded in 2014 in San Jose, CA, by three cousins, all named Nick Tsigaris, Nick the Greek has rapidly expanded, with more than 80 locations across California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, and Utah. The downtown San Diego location at 927 J Street opened in the former home of Oscar’s Mexican Seafood and is operated by franchisees Anita & Jeffery Poppe and Robert Crider. The menu includes a variety of Mediterranean dishes, from pita sandwiches and souvlaki plates to hummus and falafel, with the downtown location also serving beer and wine.
The Mira Mesa restaurant is the first of three planned locations for franchise owners Gary and Mirna Tully. An exact opening date has yet to be announced, but documents have been submitted to the San Diego Department of Environmental Health and Quality for approval. Nick the Greek has seen significant growth in recent years, with plans to reach 100 restaurants nationwide by the end of 2025.
In addition to its expansion, Nick the Greek has also introduced new menu items, including the Mediterranean Steak Bowl, developed by chef Luis Moreno. This dish features seasoned steak, fresh vegetables, crispy chickpeas, hummus, and a spicy harissa kick, offering a modern twist on Greek street food.
