San Diego's Hawthorn Coffee To Close North Park Location After 10 Years

Hawthorn Coffee, a beloved fixture in San Diego’s North Park neighborhood, will close its doors on Adams Avenue by month's end following nearly a decade serving the community.

Founded in 2015 by coffee enthusiasts Kevin Redmond and his son Dylan, Hawthorn Coffee opened as a "third wave" coffee concept, emphasizing high-quality, artisanal brews. The announcement of Hawthorn Coffee's impending closure, shared via Instagram, cited an inability to renew the lease under favorable terms as the reason for the closure.

"With our 10-year lease term coming to an end we attempted to renew. Unfortunately, we could not come to a reasonable agreement with our landlord," the statement read, noting that the proposed rent increase "far surpassed our current rental structure and would have made it difficult for us to continue in this space."

The shop’s coffee program was initially led by Joshua and Hannah Bonner, who previously ran Ladies and Gentleman Coffee Roasters, later rebranded as Foxy Coffee Co. Hawthorn featured Foxy Coffee alongside Flying Goat Coffee from Sonoma County, offering a full range of espresso drinks, pour-overs, and Chemex brews.

The shop also prioritized consistency in its batch brews and sourced organic teas from Mad Monk Tea Shop in Ocean Beach, while offering craft beverages like cold brew, North County's Nostrum shrubs, and a sparkling tisane made from coffee cherry fruit. Pastries and snacks from local favorites Bread & Cie and Black Magic Bakery rounded out the menu. Operating daily from 6am to 6pm, Hawthorn quickly became a community hub, known for its dedication to quality and craft.

Despite the closure, Hawthorn Coffee expressed gratitude for its decade-long run, stating, "It has been the honor of our lives to serve this amazing community for the last 10 years." The shop encouraged patrons to visit its sister location, Compa Coffee Roasters, in Rancho Bernardo, while it searches for a new space to relocate. As North Park loses a cherished coffee spot, the community looks forward to Hawthorn’s next chapter, hopeful for its return in a new location.

"We will continue to look for new spaces to relocate to so stay tuned, this is not the last from us," the announcement assured.

Hawthorn Coffee will close at 3019 Adams Avenue in San Diego's North Park on March 29, 2025. For more information, visit hawthorncoffee.com.
