Caravan Pizza & Ice Cream Ready To Roll Into San Diego's East Village

After nearly a year of serving pizza and ice cream on the move, Caravan is settling into a permanent home in San Diego’s East Village.

Founded by chefs Ethan Ritenour and Jarrett Wright, Caravan launched less than a year ago with the goal of serving high-quality food while promoting arts, music, fashion, and inclusivity. The two longtime friends and culinary school graduates have spent years honing their craft in San Diego's kitchens, catering companies, and residential culinary operations. With Caravan, they’re combining their culinary skills and creative passions to build a uniquely San Diego brand - one rooted in culture, consistency, and community.

The popular mobile pop-up is officially opening its first brick-and-mortar location on May 3 inside the Black & Grey Atelier building in the East Village. The grand opening celebration will run from 11am to midnight, with live music kicking off at 2pm and continuing into the night.

The East Village location will serve up Caravan’s signature 16-inch pizzas, available whole or by the slice and finished with their proprietary "Caravan Shake" seasoning. Menu highlights include The Classic, featuring soppressata, hot honey, and house red sauce; the Bacon Jam Shishito with house-made bacon jam and charred shishito peppers; the Roasted Garlic Ricotta Chorizo, topped with sliced Spanish chorizo, whipped roasted garlic ricotta, and lemon zest; and the CBR: Midnight Special, a flavor-packed combination of flame-grilled chicken, bacon, and Caravan Ranch drizzle. Whole pizzas are priced at $25, while slices go for $5.

Beyond pizza, Caravan’s small plate offerings round out the menu with flavorful, thoughtfully crafted items. Diners can enjoy roasted garlic sourdough focaccia served with whipped Caravan butter, or opt for the hearty Working Man Sandwich, layered with soppressata, Spanish chorizo, bacon jam, sliced mozzarella, grated parmesan, rocket greens, and Caravan Shake. The menu also includes blistered shishitos with fried Spanish chiles and Caravan Ranch, as well as the Wild Rocket Salad made with grilled chicken, focaccia croutons, and parmesan.

No visit to Caravan would be complete without sampling their small-batch ice cream and sorbet. Available by the scoop, in flights, or by the pint, Caravan’s frozen offerings feature inventive flavors like hot honey ice cream, horchata ice cream, tangerine sorbet, mezcal lime sorbet, and a weekly rotating flavor that keeps things interesting for return visitors.

The restaurant’s regular hours following opening weekend will be Wednesday through Sunday, with dine-in service from 11am to 5pm and to-go or mobile orders available from 7pm to 1am. With its debut, Caravan aims to provide not just great food, but a gathering space for locals and creatives alike.
