Popular San Diego County Beach Chosen To Host Surfing Competition At 2028 Summer Olympics

A popular North County San Diego beach has been chosen to host the surfing events for the 2028 Summer Olympics, which will take place primarily in Los Angeles.

San Onofre State Beach in North County San Diego will host the surfing events for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, LA28 announced recently. Trestles Beach, a renowned surfing spot within the state beach, is celebrated for its consistent waves and attracts millions of visitors annually.

Located three miles south of San Clemente on Interstate 5 at Basilone Road, about 20 miles north of Oceanside, the beach is part of a larger park that includes the San Onofre Bluffs and San Mateo Campground. The California Department of Parks and Recreation, which has operated the beach since 1971 under an agreement with the Department of the Navy for use of part of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, extended public access for another 25 years in August 2024.

The 2028 Olympic Games are expected to bring economic benefits to the region, including job creation, infrastructure improvements, and increased business opportunities, particularly for San Diego’s hospitality sector. California State Parks will collaborate with LA28, the City of Los Angeles, local stakeholders, Tribal partners, athletes, and the global surf community to prepare Trestles Beach for the international stage.

Other LA28 venues include the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena and the Universal Studios lot in Los Angeles, with more details available at the LA28 website. The selection of Trestles underscores San Diego County’s prominence in the surfing world, promising to elevate its profile as a premier coastal destination during the games.
