Rosie O’Grady’s In San Diego's Normal Heights To Temporarily Close To Make Changes To Remedy Noise Complaints

San Diego's 42-year-old Chicago-style Irish bar Rosie O’Grady's will temporarily shutter in Normal Heights later this month for an estimated 30 days to address noise-related issues following complaints from a neighbor, marking the latest chapter in the venue's fraught relationship with its surroundings.

The temporary closure of Rosie O’Grady's, expected to begin on April 28, comes after persistent noise disputes that have dogged Rosie O’Grady's since Social Syndicate, a local hospitality group, acquired the bar in 2019. Social Syndicate - which also operates Monarch Ocean Pub, La Dona OB Cantina, and several other San Diego venues - has faced scrutiny over sound levels at the Normal Heights spot.

In 2023, the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control suspended Rosie O’Grady’s liquor license for 20 days, from June 27 to July 17, amid allegations of excessive noise. Neighbors at the time claimed Social Syndicate removed ceiling soundproofing without proper permits, though the company insisted all work was "fully permitted and up to code."

Regarding this latest closure, in a statement sent to SanDiegoVille via Instagram, the company said, "We had some issues with sound. We are addressing them. We will be back open and better than ever before you know it." In a follow-up statement, a bar representative elaborated, "It's pretty simple. There were some noise issues awhile back. We have been working on how to resolve them so we can bring back live music without upsetting the neighbors. We have to shut down and soundproof the ceiling. That means an entirely new ceiling. A lot of work but a great solution for everyone."

Founded in 1983 by Ron Stout, Rosie O'Grady’s has been a Normal Heights fixture for over four decades, known for its Windy City-inspired vibe and live music. Social Syndicate's 2019 takeover preserved its Irish roots while introducing a Chicago-themed food menu under then-Corporate Chef Craig Jimenez. The group also retained Music Director Jason Rammelsberg to book live bands, a tradition that’s fueled both its popularity and, at times, its noise woes.

The bar's latest closure aims to resolve the sound issues once and for all with the installation of an entirely new ceiling. Social Syndicate’s broader portfolio, including The Local, OB Surf Lodge, and a new Monarch Ocean Pub-style bar and restaurant opening in Coronado’s Ferry Landing as early as late 2025, continues to grow, but Rosie O’Grady’s noise challenges highlight the delicate balance of maintaining a lively bar in a residential area.

Rosie O’Grady’s anticipates reopening at 3402 Adams Avenue in San Diego's Normal Heights in late May/early June, aiming to return with improved acoustics and its signature Irish charm. For more information, visit rosieogradyssd.com.
